Lipoedema: what you need to know

Lipoedema isn’t rare, but it’s rarely diagnosed. In past years, ladies with disproportionately large legs have been told to eat less and exercise more. This is not the solution.

Lipoedema is not a weight problem

Some studies show that up to 11% of women have lipoedema.

If you are one of these ladies, you may struggle with:

  • Legs disproportionately larger than the rest of your body

  • Knee pain

  • Regular bruising from very small knocks

  • Dimpled skin texture

  • Fluid retention in the leg

You are not alone

Lipoedema does not have to define how you look – and with the right shapewear, you can support your joints and take control of your appearance. If you think you may have lipoedema, take a look at the Lipoedema UK website, it's full of helpful advice about how to get a diagnosis and it provides a friendly community where you can discuss your issues with others.

Compression stockings and leggings

Compression garments work better if they are worn every day during the early stages of lipoedema and can even be prescribed by your GP but it's important to get the right fit.

They work by encouraging the flow of blood and lymph fluid within the lymphatic system to reduce the oedema or swelling. In addition fluid within the tissues is encouraged to move towards the root of the limb, where it can be drained away more easily.

By reducing the swelling, compression therapy can often reduce the level of pain and discomfort. Another added benefit is they help streamline and redefine the shape of the limbs. If your lipoedema is at a more advanced stage you may require made-to-measure garments which require specialist skills and experience to prescribe.

Non-cosmetic liposuction for lipoedema

At the moment the only treatment available is non-cosmetic liposuction, despite excellent results this is sadly still not available on the NHS or through private health care insurance. Compression garments post-surgery are a key component for successful surgery and are usually recommended to keep further swelling at bay when doing exercise or standing for long periods of time.

Comfortable. Stylish. Confident.

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again – lipoedema does not have to define how you look.

EvenLina shapewear can help you feel more confident and comfortable in clothes that you may not have worn before. Shapewear can also help your legs to look more in-proportion with the rest of your body.
